Advanced language skills in Portuguese and Spanish

Teaching Methods

This course functions as a seminar in which students participate actively at all times.

The instructor will briefly introduce each topic, and extended discussion by the whole group will follow.

Every class will include reading and writing comprehension and translation exercises.

Learning Outcomes

This seminar enables students to

– deepen their lexical and syntactic knowledge of Spanish, avoiding mistakes caused by the similarities between the two languages;

– distinguish different text types;

– understand the specific vocabulary used in different scientific and technical fields, particularly in law, medicine and economics;

– find appropriate translation solutions for matching the language register in source and target texts;

–  understand the particularities of the aesthetic use of language.

• Translation problems caused by the similarities between Spanish and Portuguese;

• False friends;

• Language levels and registers;

• Lexicon and concepts in the fields of law, economics, medicine, informatics and sports;

• Literary discourse.
