Sufficient knowledge of English and Portuguese to be able to participate actively in the seminars.

Teaching Methods

Interactive methods, involving the discussion of translations composed individually and in groups, with analysis and comment.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students should

1. have acquired advanced knowledge of English grammar, vocabulary and idioms;

2. be able to translate from Portuguese to English a wide variety of texts from various fields;

3. be able to produce texts in a variety of styles;

4. have acquired competence in proofreading and revising translations;

5. be able to apply the theoretical issues explored in the seminars of the 1st semester to practice.

Syllabus

The seminar is essentially practical and focusses on translation and revision of a wide variety of texts from different specialist areas, with a particular emphasis on law and medicine. The following medical and legal-related texts may be included:

1) clinical trial agreements;

2) clinical research law;

3) financial agreements;

4) health-related questionnaires;

5) European Medicines Agency templates.
