Recommended Prerequisites

Sufficient knowledge of English and Portuguese to be able to participate actively in the seminars.

Teaching Methods

Interactive method, involving the production of individual and group translations followed by in-depth commentary and analysis.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students should

1. have acquired advanced knowledge of English grammar, vocabulary and idioms;

2. be able to translate from Portuguese to English a wide variety of texts from various fields;

3. be able to produce texts in a variety of styles;

4. have acquired competence in proofreading and revising translations;

5. be able to apply the theoretical issues explored in first semester seminars to practice.

Syllabus

The seminar is essentially practical and focusses on translation and revision of a wide variety of texts from different specialist areas. In the field of the Performing Arts, for example, the following may be included:

1. essays for theatre and dance programmes;

2. CVs;

3. performance pieces;

4. extracts from plays.
