Syllabus

Despite its practical, hands-on approach, the course promotes systematic attention to and theoretical-critical reflection on the act of translation.

Reflection on the specific language pair (English-Portuguese): contrastive aspects, specific problems, especially of a cultural nature, with an impact on translation – idiomatic differences, 'false friends', lexical ambiguity, interference, etc.; issues raised by Eng-Port directionality – current tendency to ‘anglicize’ lexis and syntax;

Analysis of texts of various genres and on different topics, particularly from a translation perspective;

Exercises of critical translation analysis, including comparing different translations of the same ST;

Translation of texts of different genres/styles/language registers – stressing the importance of ST analysis and of considering the target context;

Familiarization with a variety of translation problems and possible solution strategies;

Learning how to use different research tools.
