Recommended Prerequisites

Advanced language skills in Portuguese and French (CEFR level C1)

Teaching Methods

Practical and interactive methods, involving individual and group translation of various types of texts; identifying and solving problems, as well as choosing the most appropriate translation strategies for each type of text; and group discussion of specific difficulties and possibilities for addressing them (systematic comparison of different proposals).

In addition to participating in class activies, students are asked to carry out homework assignments (preparation of texts to be translated).

Learning Outcomes

This course enables students to:

Deepen their knowledge of French and Portuguese grammar, vocabulary and idioms;

Recognize the different language levels in Portuguese and French as well as the problems generated by their contact;

Understand the different contextual and cultural aspects involved in rendering a Portuguese text into French;

Develop translation competences and strategies through contact with different texts;

Adapt their translation the client’s brief;

Re-read and revise translations;

Develop information mining skills and a critical approach to information sources (particularly the internet);

Master translation techniques and technologies

Create and manage files and termbases.

Syllabus

Practical translation exercises of a variety of Portuguese texts into French;

Deepening knowledge of French and Portuguese grammar, vocabulary and idioms, addressing issues such as false friends and grammatical differences between the two languages;

Acquisition of specific vocabulary based on the reading, analysis and translation of texts from different areas;

Work with texts from national or local newspaper and magazines, on various current topics, in order to further develop language skills and cultural awareness.
