Teaching Methods

- Lectures:

- presentation of fundamental contents.

- reference to current macroeconomic experiences of our country and the world relevant in the context of the topic to be exposed.

- Practical classes:

- Exercise solving.

- Statistic’s information analysis.

- Encouraging learning by doing: students solve practical exercises as independently as possible with the support of the teacher who circulates around the classroom, to oversee the success of all students, without exception.

Learning Outcomes

Overall objectives: Provide students with the fundamental analytical and policy tools used in macroeconomics at the theoretical level, with the help of graphical and algebraic techniques.

Specific objectives: To provide knowledge of the fundamental models of macroeconomic theory, in particular in the context of short / medium term and of an open economy, and its use to facilitate the understanding of current macroeconomic experiences of our country and of the world.

 Generic competencies

- understand and manipulate thoughts and ideas

- apply acquired knowledge, adapting it to new realities

Specific competencies

- Command the basic concepts of macroeconomic theory

- Learn and manipulate simple macroeconomic models

- Gain knowledge on the main issues of contemporary macroeconomic controversies

- Relate macroeconomic modelling with reality and Portuguese and international economic policy

- Develop the perception of the model’s utility as an instrument of analysis of the economic reality

2. Short Run Macroeconomic Policy: overview of the IS/LM Model.

3. Fiscal and monetary policy.

4. The budgetary deficit and macroeconomic policy.

5. Basic concepts of international macroeconomics.

6. International capital flows in Macroeconomics.

7. Macroeconomic policy in an open economy: The Mundell-Fleming Model.

8. The European experience and the Theory of the Optimal Monetary Zones (brief approach).

9. Unemployment and inflation in Macroeconomics.

10. The aggregate supply/demand model.
