Introduction to Sociology, Classical Sociological Thought, Sociological Theories.  

Teaching Methods

The classes seek to involve students in regular and dynamics academic activities. For instance oral presentation of the texts that articulates with the objectives and the specific skills above. Students must also learn to make written and oral summaries of reports arising from four workshops of the semester. The same applies to excerpts of two films / documentaries that will be screened about specific global processes. It remains the preparation of reading papers about texts presented in class. 

Learning Outcomes

Overall Objectives: Introduction to sociological research on globalization. Students should acquire skills and analytical tools essential to the sociological understanding of global social processes.

Specific Objectives

- Perception of socio-genesis of globalization

- Understanding of the production and circulation of ideas

- Understanding of local-global confrontation

- Specific processes (heritage, tourism, consumption, and environment)

Generic skills

- About the “new" history of globalization

- About the scenarios and the globalization processes

- Formulate hypotheses about globalization in Portugal

- To exercise critical thinking about the effects of globalization

Specific Skills

- To produce bibliographic selection issue about globalization in Portugal

- To review and discuss journalistic information about globalization

- To produce reports about specific situations of local-global confrontation.
