Teaching Methods

Teaching methodologies include both lecture-style and participative sessions as well as sessions where students are expected to participate both individually as well as a group. Each session has both more descriptive and more participative moments, addressing the current debates and the methodology used to draft and evaluate development aid projects.

Learning Outcomes

Overall objectives:

This course aims to familiarize students with the main current development aid debates as well as provide specific technical skills regarding the project cycle (from putting it together and submitting it to evaluating it as a donor institution).

 Specific objectives and competencies:

- to understand and critically analyze the relation between development and humanitarian action; and ethics; and state and market; and environment; and democracy; and peace and security

- draft and evaluate development aid projects to be submitted by governmental and non-governmental actors to national, regional, international and private donor institutions

 Generic competencies:

Research skills and capability to adapt to new situations; oral and written skills; capacity to apply in practice the theoretical knowledge acquired; ability to work in a group.

This course presents and analyses the main current debates on development aid, including issues such as humanitarian action, ethics, state and market, environment, democracy, peace and security. These debates provide the thematic framework for drafting and evaluating development aid projects to be submitted by governmental and non-governmental actors to national, regional, international and private donor institutions. Classes include the practical and critical discussion of the methodology underlying the drafting of development aid projects based on a logical framework matrix, timeline and budget, as well as the discussion and application of general evaluation criteria: relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability and impact.

Assessment Methods

Continuous evaluation
Group evaluation elements: submitting a preliminary document on the donor institution to which the group’s proposal will be addressed (maximum of 1000 words), submitting a preliminary version of the development aid project proposal and a final version: 30.0%
Individual evaluating elements: taking four thematic testes (of six possible) in the dates announced [40%] and the individual oral defense of the group development aid project proposal [30%]: 70.0%
