Recommended Prerequisites

Any unit of the 1st semestre of the 1st Cycle Studies with particular relevance to City and citizenship: contemporary visions

Historical and theoretical knowledge of territorial organization and urbanization

Skills in critical analysis, synthesis, organization and programming.

Teaching Methods

The course presents Theoretical classes and theoretical-practical classes.

Theoretical classes take place mainly in an expository form, addressing the topics provided in the syllabus. Some classes integrate lectures by researchers and invited professionals associated with planning and urban management.

Theoretical-practical classes consist on the discussion of the topics broached in theoretical classes and in the development of a practical exercise for assessment with presentation and group discussion.    

Learning Outcomes

Provide knowledge that enable students to recognize the role and the importance of urban management and urban design in shaping the cities over time.

Provide technical and historical knowledge that enable students to understand the mutual relations between the urban cities and the people who think its future, as well as those that use them.

Promote the construction of critical assessments of the relationship between socioeconomic and legal-administrative systems that underline urban management and their results on the dynamics of urban development.

3. Nineteenth century: the urban and territorial transformations. Urban planning, policies and technical staff

4. Theories and practices of contemporary urbanism since Haussmann to Campos Venuti

5. City, architecture, "progressive faith", "cultural comfort" and lifeworld

6. The importance of urban green spaces for heath

7. Sociological intervention and the sociologist in social intervention

8. Policies, strategies and tactics of urban regeneration.
