Teaching Methods

Initially, the main concepts and methodologies associated with relational database planning will be presented by the teacher using PowerPoint slides, after which a practical case is proposed to be solved.

From then on, classes will be mainly laboratorial and oriented to the practical usage of Microsoft Access with the teacher’s assistance.

Also, some classes will be dedicated to autonomous problem solving aiming to consolidate the main concepts

Learning Outcomes

Overall objectives

Students should be able to identify relevant data types concerning a specific organization, as well as plan and develop a relational database to store and process the data.

Specific objectives

Students should be able to:

1) Identify the different types of data

2) Develop a data relational model

3) Use the resulting model the develop a relational database

4) Develop the necessary queries to obtain relevant information

Generic competencies

Instrumental competencies (cognitive and technological)

Specific competencies

Analysis capability (being able to identify an organization information needs), synthesis capability (building a conceptual model to represent the data types and relationships needed to produce the information), elementary computing and informatics capabilities (Microsoft Access), and information management capabilities (being able to define the data storage structure and to build the necessary tools to produce the required information from it)
