Teaching Methods

The lectures, taking place in classrooms with computers, are organized to encourage students’ active involvement in learning, fostering student teacher interaction. The lectures have a strong practical component, and the students work in the classroom is based on exercises.

Learning Outcomes

Overall objectives
Introducing and discussing various sources of sociological information, aiming to familiarize the students with the logics and the terms of research, consultation and use of sources

Specific objectives and competencies
-to promote the analysis, use and importance of the main sources of information in the field of sociology and social sciences - disseminate knowledge concerning the characteristics of specialized information- to initiate students in the management of library resources and familiarize them with the media that allow access to informatios- to alert students to the fact that information sources are not innocuous.

Generic competencies
- to promote the use of technological resources to locate, acquire and store specialized information- to analyse information systems and concepts that allow students processing information;- to become familiar with research strategies in social sciences databases;- to establish criteria for evaluating sources of information.

Syllabus

1 – Documental space, bibliographical research and elaboration of scientific texts (16 hours)

a) Fundamental economic concepts. Forms of representation of economic information.

b) Sociological research in five steps: define the topic, find information, select the documents, processing information, restore the information;

c)  How to make a book review?

d) Select, organize, and cite information with freeware (Zotero);

e) Diversity of publications: journals, periodicals, nom periodicals and gray literature;

f) How to use a system of bibliographical references?

2. Sources of information: concepts, types and uses (8 hours)

3. Sources of electronic information (16 hours)

a) How to search in the internet?

b) Search engines;

c) Boolean and advanced search;

d) Web pages assessment;

e) Research in integrated libraries catalogs: Porbase and SIIB / UC;

f) Search of statistical sources: INE and Eurostat;

4. Ethical concerns within the sociological activity (4 hours).
