Teaching Methods

The lectures are organized to encourage students’ active involvement in learning, fostering student‑teacher interaction. In some classes problems and questions are discussed in order to consolidate fundamental concepts. A set of selected scientific papers and reports from international institutions, are presented by groups of students in classes. This activity is designed to develop the capacity of analysis and synthesis, the communication skills, and to allow the contact with recent research in the area of Environmental Economics.

Overall objectives
The course aims to show how Economics approaches environmental issues.
Specific competencies and objectives

Students should
-Understand the main approaches to the study of the interactions between Environment and Economy;
-Recognize and adjust the principles of the neoclassical approach to the context of Environmental Economics.
-Recognize and adjust the principles of the neoclassical approach to the context of Environmental Economics;
-Know and understand the strengths and weaknesses of the major approaches to: the theory of natural resources; the Economics of Pollution; and the environmental economic valuation techniques.

Generic competencies
-Capacity of analysis and to communicate orally and in writing, and group interaction;
-Capacity to establish, critically and wisely, the relationship between the concepts and models presented and actual economic agents’ behaviour;
-Capacity to apply appropriate mathematical techniques to solve real and/or simulated problems.
