Teaching Methods

The classes will combine lectures on the topics of the course with participatory methods promoting student’s autonomy and the development of their generic analytical and communicational skills.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course students should be able: 1. to identify the different types of gender equality policies; 2. to identify the factors reproducing inequalities between men and women and the strategies to eradicate them; 3. to evaluate any public policy from the point of view of gender equality; 4. to gain capacities, skills and knowledge that favour the building of more equal gender relations in the social contexts in which they are located.

At the level of generic competencies it is stimulated the understanding of ideas, the capacity to mobilize the learned concepts and theories in the interpretation of reality, critical reading skills, capacities in expressing opinions and argumentation skills, team work and oral and written communication skills.

Syllabus

The main objective of this curricular unit is the study of gender equality public policies both at the national and the European levels. Besides the acquaintance with these policies, we will look for the political philosophy which stands each one (statements and inferences). The programme includes: 1. Evolution of gender equality policies in Portugal and Europe; 2. Theoretical approaches of equality policies in the field of employment: equality of opportunities; positive actions; mainstreaming; 3. Main aspects of the mainstreaming as a strategy to promote equality of women and men: methods and phases (diagnosis; planning; implementation; monitoring; evaluation); 4. Methodology of gender analysis of public policies: levels and agents; methods, indicators and tools.
