Recommended Prerequisites

 - Basic notions of contemporary history, mainly related with the general periodization of European and world history.

- Basic concepts of economics, mainly related with Development, Growth, Economic Cycles, Structures and Conjunctures.

 

Teaching Methods

The organization of the lectures in theoretical-practicalsessions is intended to maximize the discussions of relevant subjects and to favor students’ participation. The more theoretical lectures consist of an oral exposition, supported by materials considered to be more relevant by the lecturer. The structure of the exam creates incentives for students to engage with the texts because one third of the questions is related with the materials explored in the lectures.

General goals

- Synthetize the historical processes underpinning the formation of the contemporary world economy;

Specific goals

- Understand the meanings of the structural transformation of the economy and society generated by industrialization;

- Know and interpret the processes of economic globalization between the seventies of the 19th century and the First World War;   

- Describe and explain the mechanisms that account for the “great crisis” of 1929;

- Understand the circumstances associated with the economic growth of the “golden age” of capitalism and with the creation of different Welfare-State models.  

Generic capabilities

- Relate the socioeconomic phenomena of the past with some of the present day issues.

Specific capabilities

- Acquisition of minimal knowledge of European and world economic history.

1. History, history of the economy and historical economics. Economic history.

2. Economic growth and industrialization – 18th and 19th centuries.
 
3. Functioning and performance of industrial capitalism (1840-1913).

4. Economic globalization in the age of colonial imperialism (1870-1914).

5. The economic consequences of war and peace.

6. The international economy between the wars (1918-1939)

7. The great depression of the world economy, the New Deal and other experiments.

8. The Second World War and the collapse of the European hegemony.

9. The golden age of world economic growth (1948-1973).

10. Western democracies, Keynesian policies and “welfare” societies.
