Recommended Prerequisites

Macroeconomics and Microeconomics at the undergraduate level.

Teaching Methods

Exposition and active discussion of the syllabus main topics. Students are requested to write a small paper on one Portuguese region at NUTS III level, or on one Portuguese municipality.

Learning Outcomes

The main purpose of this course is to discuss how regional development is a peculiar matter and different from the economic development issues at the national level. A deeper acknowledge of the Portuguese regional panorama is also a relevant quest. The main competency aimed to is to develop the ability of making a social and economic diagnosis of a specific region and proposing consistent policies.

3. The spatial distribution of economic activity;

4. The regional input-output models;

5. The Portuguese regions and their problems.
