Teaching Methods
The teaching methodologies adopted are mixed, being composed of passive and active methods, depending on the topic and learning objective. In the presentation of conceptual issues we resort on expository teaching methodologies, wherever possible using illustrative examples to cement the learning. Other applied topics, for example, the analysis of parts of papers, the interpretation of decision analytical models, the calculation of expected costs and consequences, we resort on active learning methodologies in which the student participates in solving problems. This course has a mixed assessment consisting of the preparation of an applied work (50%) and a final exam (50%). The work consists of reading three papers selected by the teacher, and respond to questions previously posed by the teacher.
Learning Outcomes
The student must be able to justify the need and importance of performing economic evaluation of health programs. In addition the student should be able to explain the context in which these methods are an asset for decision making. Identify the types of studies recognized by the literature is also an objective. The student should be able to identify the main types of costs associated with alternatives, to understand and interpret the most common decision analytical models (decision trees and Markov models), and from them estimate expected costs and consequences of alternative options. The calculation of incremental cost-effectiveness ratios and their interpretation is also an objective of this curricular unit. The ability to read critically and understand the economic evaluation papers that are published in scientific specialty is also a goal.
Work Placement(s)
NoSyllabus
The topics covered include: introduction, motivation and importance of economic evaluation of health programs: a taxonomy for the methods of economic evaluation; calculation of incremental cost-effectiveness ratios, and their interpretation as tool to aid in decision making; Evaluation economic and decision analytical models – brief introduction to decision trees and Markov models; cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyzes; procedures/methods for estimating costs of the alternatives under evaluation.
