Recommended Prerequisites

Knowledge gained by passing the following courses: Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Public Economics and International Economics.

The bibliography will be used predominantly in English so that English skills are essential.

 

Teaching Methods

The participation of students is the basic premise for the functioning of the Seminar, encouraging autonomy in learning.

After the presentation of the integration process in Europe and its current institutional framework, classes are dedicated to the topics proposed.

Students are faced with the requirement of understanding articles in economics, which require the use of knowledge gained during the previous semesters, stimulating the capacity for analysis and synthesis and the ability to properly communicate orally and written, while fostering analysis and discussion.

Overall objectives

Integration of knowledge acquired throughout the degree in Economics through its application to the understanding and analysis of the European economy.

Specific objectives / Specific competencies

1. Clearly distinguish the main stages of the European integration process, as well as its political and economic grounds.

2. Explain the main features of the single European market by identifying and explaining their accompanying policies.

3. Explain the architecture of macroeconomic policies within the European monetary union.

 Generic competencies

Development of the following competencies: capacity of analysis and synthesis, capacity of oral and written communication, reading comprehension in English, ability to work in groups, critical and self-critical abilities, information management skills, capacity for applying knowledge in practice, capacity to learn.

The European integration process: political and economic milestones.

Proposed themes for presentation and discussion: 1. World economy, regionalism, multilateralism; 2. EU commercial policy; 3. Fiscal federalism and EU budget; 4. Regional policy; 5. Common agricultural policy; 6. Environmental policy and common fisheries policy; 7. State aid and industrial policy; 8. Euro, an historical overview; 9. European sovereign-debt crisis; 10. Employment and labour market.
