Teaching Methods

- Theoretical classes using the lecture method and the Socratic dialogue.

- Practical classes consisting of group work and resolution of worksheets.

- Individual reading and guided discussion of texts whose reading is mandatory.

- Students may accomplish the curricular unit by means of continuous assessment or final exam.

Learning Outcomes

a) Analyse the social phenomena according to the methodological principle of understanding and explain the social by social;

b) Developing the relational nature of scientific knowledge in rupture with the spontaneous representation on society;

c)  Develop the critical thinking through the continuous critical exercise of scientific reason;

d) Develop research problems on concrete educational situations;

e) Enhance interdisciplinary through the practice of relate social, cultural and economic dimensions;

f) Understanding the origins of mass schooling in Portugal, integrating it in the process of globalization of education systems worldwide;

g) Knowing the theories and models of analysis of social and educational inequalities;

h) Analyse the school curriculum as a selective and arbitrary cultural adjustment;

i) Linking school culture with the youth culture and the labor market.

Topic I – The Portuguese School and the globalization of mass schooling:

1. Genesis of mass schooling.

2. Mass schooling in Portugal.

3. The case of the Unified Secondary Education.

Topic II – Schooling and social system:

1. From optimistic demand to the disenchanted search for education: school failure and social inequalities in the face of education.

2. Gender: female advantage in school context and male advantage in labor system.

3. Ethnicity: immigration, ethnocentrism and multiculturalism.

4. School inequalities and social inequalities: the case of the evaluation.

Topic III – Education and Culture:

1. The curriculum as symbolic violence.

2. Higher culture, popular culture, massive culture and schooling culture.

3. The contemporary status of the body and Physical Education.

Topic IV – School, labor and youth cultures:

1. Schooling and economical system: non-linear relations.

2. From school to labor: trajectories to adulthood.

3. The culture of youth and the transition to adulthood.
