Learning Outcomes

The main objective of this teaching unit is for the candiate to write a reasearch proposal for a scientific project which forms the main goal of the work which they will carry out during the research leading to their Doctioral Thesis in Chemistry.

The persuit of this main objective will involve the achievement of other specific objectives, knowing how: 

1. To carry out a critical analysis of the scientific literature;

2. To show critical reasoning, integrating knowledge and creativity;

3. To demonstrate the capacity of scientific planning to respond to specific questions;

4. To show the ability of scientific programming in terms of time, physical and human aspects;

5. To demonstrate the capacity to anticipate the probabilty of expected results;

6. To show capability of anticipating critical points for the success of a project and prepare alternaitve strategies;;

7. To develop the capability for written and spoken scientific communication.

Syllabus

This curricular unit does not have a defined programme of topics. However, in this course the student must demonstrate capacity for:

i) intensive study of the scientifiuc literature;

ii) scientific discussions with the supervisor;

iii) analysis, synthesis and managment of scientific information;

iv) preparing a written dicument in the form of a scientific research proposal, which must include: review of the state of the art, description of research problem to be addressed, techniques or methodologies to be used, suggestions of expected results and critical points for carrying out the project, as well as alternative strategies;

v) oral defence of the written proposal.
