Teaching Methods

Lectures aimed to the systematization and organization of knowledge and methodological approaches.

The theoretical and practical classes- although there are no clearly difference from them - intended for the analysis of case studies presented by the students in the light of knowledge and adopted methodology.

Students will develop a small project based on the observation of real situations that they will propose.

Learning Outcomes

Provide the students with large scope knowledge about the most important concepts related to building rehabilitation, not only in the technical and scientific scope, but also under the historical and cultural point of view.
It is also an objective of this unit to provide students with essential skills for multidisciplinary dialogue, with different experts, on the domain of rehabilitation.

1. Rehabilitation trilogy: conservation / maintenance / rehabilitation
2. Defects and anomalies in construction
- mechanisms for defects occurrence;
- common defects;
- durability of structures and construction materials;
3. Strategies and techniques for inspection and appraisal
- General principles for diagnosis;
- Methods for diagnosis implementation;
- Support equipment and tests for diagnosis;
- Buildings inspection.
4. Rehabilitation, restoration and conservation
- Finishings for walls, floors, ceilings and roofs;
- Windows and stone frames.
5. Functional renewal/upgrade of buildings
- in order to change use;
- acoustic rehabilitation;
- higrothermal behaviour of buildings.
6. Structural rehabilitation and its techniques
- Structures using different materials: wood, concrete, steel;
- Structural and non-structural masonry.
7. Design methodology for rehabilitation projects
