Teaching Methods
Teaching methods: lectures combining theoretical explanations with conceptual and real-case discussions. Activities regarding the development of case studies, workshop and conferences participation.
Learning Outcomes
To provide the main concepts, principles and theories required to model and solve hydrosystems decision problems, understanding the various issues involved.
Acquiring capabilities in using scientific methods in systemic decision procedures for hydrosystyems.
Work Placement(s)

Introduction to hydrosystems analysis: conventional versus systemic approaches; optimization models (objective function, constraints, decision variables and exogenous variables); single-objective versus multiple-objective optimization; linear models, non-linear models, integer models, lumped and distributed models, deterministic and stochastic (explicit and implicit) models; uncertainties and reliability of hydrosystems design and analysis. Operations research techniques: linear, non-linear, dynamic, integer, combinatory programming, heuristic techniques. Decision issues in water resources: technical, economic, social, legal, environmental and political aspects Applications of optimization in hydrosystems. Decision-aid methods for reservoirs/dams, aquifers, wastewater systems and water supply systems management.
