Teaching Methods

The classes interchange oral exposition and participated discussion of the syllabus themes, supported by visual projection material. In each class, there is an oral presentation of a recent research article (critical review) by a student’s group, followed by discussion on implications for social work practice.

Learning Outcomes

To understand the family complexity, considering its universality and socio-cultural and historical diversity;

- To understand the main paradigms for family study and to evaluate their relevance and interdependence for specific socialwork

interventions;

- To contextualize the different psycho-social functions of contemporary kinship;

- To identify the main dimensions of family educational practices and their role in the children personal development;

- To conceptualize the identity and social role of parenthood through the life cycle;

- To know family empowerment socio-educational procedures/Parental Education programs;

- To interpret the actual research data on socio-family variables, conceptualizing their theoretical and practical implications.

The family universality and diversity: Who are family members/ What do families do/How are families connected to other groups.

- The family conceptualization according with the interactional, developmental, ecological, systemic and constructivist approaches;

- The nature of family relationships in contemporary society;

- Parental educational practices and children development outcomes;

- The social and identity function of parenthood through the life cycle;

- Family empowerment programs.
