Design and Regulations of Fire Safety

Recommended Prerequisites

Systems, Installations e Equipment of Fire Safety and Building Evacuation and Organization of the Management of Fire Safety of the Masters in Urban Fire Safety programme.

Teaching Methods

The first half of the lessons is dedicated to the explanation of the content of the Fire Safety in Buildings Regulation (DL 220 and Portaria 1532, 2008), illustrated with practical examples which raise the intervention of the student. These lessons will be taught based on presentations and basic bibliography (including regulations and standards), using audio-visual means.

At the end of each subject of the Regulation an overview of the subject and its application to the project will be done so that the student matures the transmitted concepts. The application of the regulation aspects focuses on the drawing and design of the different fire safety systems.

The remaining half of the lessons is dedicated to the elaboration of a project of fire safety of a building, mainly of the 3^rd or 4^th risk category, for the exclusive application of the current regulation.

Learning Outcomes

Fire safety in buildings project/study is already established, for some time, in national regulations. In current situations designers have to prepare their safety studies based on regulation published on this subject. Therefore, in this course the main objective is to transmit the regulation’s contents, explaining the background of the solutions adopted and present the existing standards in fire safety of buildings.

The second objective is to consolidate the knowledge initially transmitted in this course, being carried out a Fire Safety in Buildings (SCIE) study (project) where students have to apply the regulation and standardization of SCIE.
