Recommended Prerequisites

Knowledge of Portuguese language and a foreign language, preferablyEnglish.

Teaching Methods

The curricular unit will take place in two stages: 1st - theoretical and methodological approach; 2nd -  project work development.

The second stage will be subdivided into 4 parts:

• Review of state of art on the main themes selected for this course;

• Study area observation, collection and analysis of indicators regarding the study area;

• Proposals presentation and discussion by taking into account the study case and other scientific work developed in other countries and research centers.

• Final Project presentation and discussion.

Learning Outcomes

• Teach and apply Geography knowledge in the practice of Architecture and Urbanism;

• Collaborate so that the architect can deepen and develop critical analysis skills regarding the relation between the dynamics of urbanization and the growing complexity of the urban phenomenon (e.g. scale, development context, well-being and equity), thus strengthening its role in society;

• Show the contribute and relevance of Geography in the process of  Spatial Planning;

• Reflect on the role of geographical conditionalisms (both material and immaterial) in structuring urban spaces;

• Develop investigating methods and techiniques that allow for a geographical understanding which is essential for interpreting the urban landscapes.

I- Introduction: the contribute of urban geography in the practice of Architecture; the role of the geographer in Spatial Planning ; concepts in urban geography (e.g. city, urbanism and urbanization in time and space)

II- Urban phenomenon and spatial organization: Portuguese case studies

• Demographic, economic, social and political processes in spatial planning

• Forms and functions in urban space: interdependency and interrelarion

III- Equity in access and right to to the city

• City Geographies (both social and functional)

• (Social and cultural) Dynamics in the urban space

IV – Urban Landscapes.
