Teaching Methods
The methodology of the CU is based on face-to-face coaching of the development of the works threw practical classes of individual or group critic sessions, theoretical-practical class of thematic information orienting the problems and solutions of the project. Assistance to students is processed on individual level, with a report for each specific stage of the work. Additionally, particularly during the group evaluation sessions, there is a discussion and comparison of the works of the students and their level of detail.
Learning Outcomes
The pedagogical goal of this curricular unit (CU) consists in the development of methods and capacity to conceive architectural projects that comply both with aesthetic and technical requirements.
It also aims the development of a critical reflection about the practice of architectural design, as an approximation to its real context. Promote the value of “concept” as an overall solution and framework for the stages of the architectural design, considering the awareness of the students regarding means of expression and construction material adjusted to the initial problem. The architectural designs must consider criteria of urban insertion, formal and spatial aspects, adjusted to the environment. The designs must express an adequate solution, responding to the specificity of each brief with a specific materialization. Besides the clarity of the conceptual process, the designs must make clear constructive coherence at every stage of the development of the work.
Work Placement(s)
NoSyllabus
The main subject of the curricula of the CU is housing, in two distinct moments. Firstly, a small brief – the design for a dwelling unit with no specific context – to be developed during the period of a month, with scales of detail related to the description of the space and its representation as well as the understanding and experimentation of the tools of architectural design. Secondly, the development of a collective housing scheme, until the end of the first semester and during the second semester. This assignment seeks to complement the first brief with the formation of a critical consciousness of the project and the urban intervention, having in view a coherent and rigorous materialization of ideas. From the design of the urban scheme to that of the housing types, the project must evolve as a simulation of a given real situation, seeking to promote the detail of the overall solution with focus on certain sectors and construction system.
