Training Course on Ethical and Social Aspects in Laboratory Genetics

General Objectives of the Course

The course's main objective is to transmit to the trainees the most recent knowledge in the field of good practice standards for genetic counselling and Portuguese legislation and regulations in the field of clinical genetics and ethics/bioethics, also understanding the specificities and regulations in the context of biobanks. Promote teamwork and the acquisition of communication and ethical skills.

Admission Requirements

Candidates with Knowledge of biology, biochemistry in the pre graduate cycle and let them be:) graduates that are interested in the subjects approached in the course; b) other specialists with a Curriculum Vitae that is considered relevant by the coordination to attend the course; c) students that express interest in the subjects of the course.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The final grade is expressed on a qualitative scale of Pass or Fail. To pass, the student must have a minimum attendance of 75% and answer a question of the student's choice from a list of possible topics.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

At the end of the course the learner should: Discuss the concepts of bioethics and analyze its repercussion in the context of clinical laboratory genetics; Discuss the concepts of privacy, confidentiality and ownership of genetic data; Discuss the relationship between genetic information and social discrimination/stigmatization; Discuss inappropriate applications in the context of clinical laboratory genetics; Evaluate the commercial interests of laboratory genetic data; Analyze the bioethical issues in the context of biobanks; Discuss the different challenges and ethical and social dilemmas in the context of clinical laboratory genetics.
