Specialization Course in Management and Health Economics

General Objectives of the Course

The increasing expenditure on health, the evolution of technology in the service of medicine, an aging population and recent reforms of the Portuguese health system have been creating the need for new skills in various health care professionals and analysts and researchers in area of health administration.

Admission Requirements

May apply: a) Holders of a Bachelor degree or legal equivalent; b) Holders of a foreign higher education degree awarded after a first study cycle organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by an acceding State; c) Holders of a foreign higher education degree recognized as complying with the objectives of the Bachelor degree by the Scientific Council of the Faculty d) In duly justified cases, applicants showing a scientific and professional curriculum relevant for attending the current Course may access upon recognition by the Scientific Council of the Faculty.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The final evaluation of each course unit is expressed by a classification in a numeric scale from 0 to 20. The course’s final grade is obtained through the weighted arithmetic average (rounded to the nearest unit) of the compulsory and elective course units, having the ECTS number as a weighted factor. The courses’ final grade is expressed in the range of 10-20 of the numerical integer scale 0 to 20, as well as its equivalent in the European comparability scale of classification. The final course classification is associated to a qualitative mention, expressed in terms of 10 to 13 – Sufficient, 14 and 15 – Good, 16 and 17 – Very Good and 18 to 20 – Excellent.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The Specialization course will allow to:
- Deepen the management skills in health services;
- Analyze major issues of health policy through the application of economic principles;
- Mastering the management indicators and outcomes in health services.
