General Objectives of the Course

This Masters course aims to provide advanced training in various areas of fire safety and train specialists, at professional level, in matters linked to the technological development.
There is another goal, which is to transmit a training allowing to whom attend the courses make a self-learning along life and at a self-orientated mode.
The curriculum reflects not only the fundamental areas of fire safety, but also the most advanced knowledge in the field.
It is also intended that the students after finish the course are able to plan and manage specialized project tasks by applying fire safety engineering, becoming thus an agent of innovation and optimization of resources.

Admission Requirements

a) Holders of a Bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in Civil Eng., Mechanical Eng., Electrical and Computer Eng., Chemical Eng., Territory Eng., Material Eng., Civil Protection Eng. and related areas, with a minimum classification of 14/20. Eventually, applications with other qualifications and / or an average less than 14/20 that can be considered based on the relevance of CV in the area;
b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree awarded as a result of a 1st cycle of studies organized in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process, in the areas referred to in point a);
c) Holders of a higher academic degree obtained abroad that is recognized as satisfying the objectives of the degree of Bachelor by the Scientific Council of FCTUC;
d) In duly justified cases, holders of a scientific and professional CV relevant to the frequency of this cycle of studies, which is recognized by the Scientific Council of FCTUC.

The course is intended for Local Council technicians, technical assistance offices, insurance companies, the National Civil Protection Authority (ANPC), Health and Safety at Work technicians, safety technicians, higher education teachers, fire safety enterprise technicians.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Given the fact that pedagogical assessment is inseparable from teaching, it is intended to ascertain competences and knowledge that students acquired, their critical thinking, their ability to point out and solve problems, as well as their written and oral expression. Students admitted to examination are those who are registered in the curricular units in the academic year in which the exams are carried out and, simultaneously, registered in those examinations, whenever this registration is necessary, in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.
The assessment elements are the following examples: written or oral exam, tests, written or practical assignments, as well as individual or group projects that may have to be orally defended and students’ participation in classes. Assessment of each curricular unit may include one or more of the mentioned assessment elements.
The mark obtained by each student in each curricular unit consists of a whole number between 0 and 20 points and students who obtain the minimum final mark of 10 points are successfully assessed.
Whenever assessment of a curricular unit comprises more than one assessment element, the final mark is calculated on the basis of the marks students obtained in each assessment element by means of a formula that is made public.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

In each course unit a set of objectives and competences are transmitted to the students in the beginning of the school year.
The assessment of achievement of the established objectives is performed by written examinations, practical works or both. The practical works are individual and include a final oral presentation and defense. The students always have at least three opportunities to be approved in the course unit, a normal examination, appeal exam and special season exam.
