PhD in Cultural Heritage and Museology

General Objectives of the Course

a) Help students further develop knowledge and skills acquired in previous cycles of studies and/or in their professional activities or other activities;
b) Strengthen the ability to participate in the theoretical, deontological, and epistemological discussions on methodological issues of relevance for cultural heritage and museology (theory and history of cultural heritage and museums, management and programming, conservation and rehabilitation, deontology);
c) Strengthen the ability to use research to produce new knowledge and new technological solutions in the areas of cultural heritage and museology;
d) Enable students to complete and assess cultural heritage and museology projects;
e) Train students to work in the areas of cultural heritage and museology, in both public and private sectors and at the local, regional, national or international level, as employees, consultants (freelancers) or entrepreneurs.

Admission Requirements

a) Holders of an MA or a legally equivalent degree;
b) Holders of a BA or of especially relevant academic or scientific qualifications recognised as attesting the ability to attend this cycle of studies by the legal and statutory scientific body of the university or institute where they intend to be admitted;
c) Holders of academic, scientific or professional qualifications recognised as attesting the ability to attend this cycle of studies by the legal and statutory scientific body of the university or institute where they intend to be admitted.

Professional Goals

In the fields of scientific and technological research, museology and curatorship, management and programming of cultural heritage, conservation and rehabilitation of cultural heritage, education and training, cultural activities and their dissemination, journalism and organizational communication, multimedia and digital contents, cultural tourism and leisure, territorial planning and urban management, local and regional development, administration/management and diplomacy — as researcher and promoter, museologist and curator, manager and programmer, journalist or communication officer, senior managerial staff member of Public Administration or at international organizations, senior official at private organizations, adviser, entrepreneur.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Since evaluation is a pedagogical and educational activity inextricably linked with teaching, it is designed to assess the skills and knowledge acquired by students, namely, their ability to pose and solve problems, the domain of oral and written expression, and the ability to critically review presented proposals and implemented solutions. All eligible candidates to the exams must be enrolled in the relevant course units in the academic year of such exams. If necessary, they must also register for those exams, in accordance with no. 6 of article 4 of the Pedagogical Regulations of the University of Coimbra.
Some of the evaluation instruments of the PhD course in Cultural Heritage and Museology include class participation, bibliographical and documentary research assignments, critical reviews, activity reports, presentations, participation in and/or organization of events, participation in and/or organization of publications, participation in knowledge transfer projects, participation in projects for the provision of applied research services, etc. The evaluation process for each course unit may include one or more of the aforementioned evaluation instruments. Grades for each course unit are expressed through a mark on an integer scale from 0 to 20. Students must attain a minimum mark of 10 to pass a course unit.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

a) Rethink and analyse the issues of cultural heritage and museology from a transdisciplinary perspective;
b) Understand that there is a correlation between the topics of cultural heritage and the areas of memory and identities, cultural policies, and local/regional development;
c) Complete and assess cultural heritage and museology projects.

Graduation Requirements

A passing grade for all course units specific to each of the four Paths (or Fields of Expertise), for a total of 240 ECTS, including the writing and public defence of an original dissertation.
