General Objectives of the Course

Many students pursue higher education while holding doubts about its importance and what their role is as students. In the absence of a structured attempt of clarifying these doubts, they may accompany them throughout their academic journey, and even beyond its conclusion. Adding to this, despite being enrolled in higher education, many students don’t possess the necessary tools to carry out a productive study. Finally, they lack orientation about the way they can positively impact their environment and the people who surround them. The Course – “Why Study, How to Study” aims to clarify these doubts. It defines its purpose as that of: offering answers regarding the purpose of education and the role of the student in present society, at the same time giving the students the necessary tools to study in the most efficient and effective, and develop their capacities for citizenship.

Admission Requirements

Students enrolled in the University of Coimbra and students whose curriculum is recognized by the coordinator as relevant for attendance of the course.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

By the end of the course, students should have developed the following skills: capacity to think critically about different purposes for education, being capable of constructing their own perspective about said meaning; capacity to think critically about their role as students in present society, as well as ponder the responsibilities which they may assume through that role; capacities necessary to carry out an effective and efficient study, namely, construction of study habits, concentration, emotional intelligence, memory, and motivation; conscience regarding the impact of their actions on society and the people who surround them.
