Japanese Language and Culture Course – level V

General Objectives of the Course

To gain skills corresponding to level N5 - N4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Increase communication skills using basic expressions in social and family experience as well as workplaces and study, public places and social events. According to the Common European Framework of Reference, students are social agents, having the knowledge to respect the concept of plurilingualism in living in Japan today.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Students will learn to deal with everyday situations, exchange information and ideas with young people and adults, to communicate thoughts and feelings, and will learn more about the Japanese way of life and Japanese mentality. They will be able to exchange information regarding personal matters, describing others, ordering at restaurants, talking about food, planning trips, participating in events, talking about holidays and traditions. Students will learn more Kanji characters, combining Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana and their rules, they will learn the differences between oral and written language. They will be able to read and understand websites/blogs and emails information, restaurants’ menus, letters, to write with a richer vocabulary. They will continue to study grammatical particles, verbs, noun-modifiers in present and past tense and formal /informal, adverbs, cause, emphasis, advice, forbidden. Following Marugoto, newspapers, magazines, films and documentaries students will analyze traditional Japanese culture and compare it with the younger generations’ habits and the current issues, like dress code, serving and preparing dishes at restaurants, nature, holidays, special days like new year in Japan and how to spend those days.
