Japanese Language and Culture Course – level III

General Objectives of the Course

Students will expand and reinforce their oral and written skills in Japanese. They will also gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture in the world context, based on the didactic materials made available by the instructor.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Students will be able to speak about simple things like daily routines, family, work and the place where they live. They will be able to understand single phrases and common expressions. They will be able to communicate simple tasks and routines that demand a simple and direct exchange of information regarding common subjects. Students will learn more Kanji characters, will learn how to write combining Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana characters and their rules. They will read and analyze simple articles; they will write more complex texts about their studies, their reality and subjects related with immediate needs. They will study grammatical particles, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, phrase structure with verbs in present/past tense, adversative conjunction, learn to ask permission/authorization. Introduction to traditional Japanese culture and comparison with habits of the younger generations regarding household chores, season appreciation, city aspects, and going out with friends. Brief overview of Japan Geography and History.
