General Objectives of the Course

The Master Program, leading to the degree Master in Social Intervention, Innovation and Entrepreneurship is a partnership between the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences and the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra, which derives from a deep reflection on social intervention practices and, given that reflection, the need to support intervention in innovative projects and in a dynamic of entrepreneurial action.
This cycle of studies aims to improve and expand the capacity of understanding, through a foresight and holistic way, action, processes of change and development and social intervention paradigms in multidimensional contexts; to enhance the capacity for initiative and skills of identifying and using opportunities for development and management/creation and evaluation of resources and answers; to enable strategic analysis of contexts and actions, using methodologies and innovative processes; to enable the design and rationale of alternative management process and social risk prevention that can generate social capital (value); to deepen their knowledge of techniques and processes of planning, design and implementation of social programs and projects; to develop the identification and understanding of social needs (traditional and emerging), through the determination of indicators of social well-being and levels of precariousness/integration of groups, individuals and territories; to develop research skills that can generate knowledge and promote a process of scientific and professional self-development throughout life.

This Master’s Degree is organized into 4 semesters, corresponding to a total of 120 ECTS, covering the fields of Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Applied Informatics and Research Methodology. The studies plan comprises 9 compulsory curricular units and an elective curricular unit: 1st Year – 1st semester – Society, Innovation and Entrepreneurship – Social Policies and Citizenship – Change and Strategic Planning – Elective Curricular Unit; 1st Year – 2nd semester – Intervention Paradigms in Contemporary Society – Management and Evaluation of Social Programs and Projects – Decision, Risks Management and Opportunities – Deeply Discussed Issues of Research; 2nd Year – 1st semester – Contexts and Practices of Social Entrepreneurship – Laboratory of Applied New Technologies; 2nd Year – 1st and 2nd semesters – Dissertation or Project Report. Attendance and successful assessment in the curricular component of this Master’s Course (75 ECTS), for those students who do not want to proceed their studies, will be awarded with a Post Graduate Degree Diploma.

Admission Requirements

Candidates to the master’s degree may be, according to the conditions expressed in Article 17 th of Decree-Law n. 74/2006, March 24th (as amended by Decree-Law n. 107/2008, June 25th and by Decree-Law n. 230/2009, Setembro 14th, and rectified by Corrigendum n. 8/2009, October 27th, amended and republished by Decree-Law n. 115/2013, August 7th : a) holders of a Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent; b) holders of a foreign higher academic degree, that was awarded after accomplishing a 1st cycle of studies, which should be structured according to the principles of the Bologna Process in an adhering country to this Process; c) holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized to meet the objectives of the Bachelor’s degree by the legal competent Scientific Council of the Higher Education Institution to which they want to be admitted. d) holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies by the legal competent Scientific Council of the Higher Education Institution to which they want to be admitted. * In each academic year, the admission notice for the course, which establishes the specific access requirements, should be consulted.

Professional Goals

The Master’s Degree in Social Intervention, Innovation and Entrepreneurship preferably intended to:
• Students with a degree from the 1st cycle in areas with affinities with the Master (eg, social work, sociology, social psychology, social policy, local development and socio-cultural)
• professionals working in projects of social and / or intervention in social organizations
• current and upcoming social entrepreneurs, who develop or plan to develop projects and initiatives of social innovation.
This course is recognized for the purposes of career promotion of Teachers of Primary and Secondary Education, under the terms established by Article 54 of the ECD (Teaching Career Statute). Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

This cycle aims to promote and consolidate analytical skills, related to planning and social intervention, at a global and local level, enhancing the emergence of creative and reflexive responses to scenarios of vulnerability, exclusion, cultural and socio-economic inequalities, precariousness and social suffering. For this purpose, it frames a markedly interdisciplinary training program and a pragmatic orientation, combining innovation and social entrepreneurship, which can put in the first line the strategic reasoning of interventions aimed at the common good, the optimization of resources and socio-economic coherent articulation between public and private.

Graduation Requirements

The accomplishment of this Master’s Degree in Social Intervention, Innovation and Entrepreneurship implies the elaboration and the public examination of a final work (with 45 ECTS credits) in the fourth semester of the course. Thus, Master’s students may choose between carrying out a research, which will end up with the presentation of a Dissertation, and elaborating an intervention project in the field of social entrepreneurship, which will end up with the presentation of a Project Report.
