Master in Creative Writing

General Objectives of the Course

1. To develop advanced writing skills in areas such as literary writing, audiovisual narratives (radio, press, world wide web) and performing arts (theatre, cinema, television);
2. To develop a critical knowledge of language and writing based on a diverse set of creative writing practices, whether in fictional or nonfictional genres;
3. To promote the experimentation with and invention of new forms of writing, through a broad understanding of writing as a defining practice of the arts and humanities and one of the crucial expressions of creativity and innovation in the contemporary world;
4. To train creative writing professionals for the cultural and arts sector.

Admission Requirements

a) BA graduates; b) those with an educational, scientific or professional CV recognized by the official scientific authority of the University of Coimbra as showing competence to undertake this cycle of studies; c) Level C1 in English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; d) sample of unpublished or published written production (fictional text, drama, poetry or film script, up to a maximum of 3000 words), which will be used for assessing the candidate’s ability for literary creativity. This sample is evaluated using criteria to be made explicit in the opening notice for the study cycle, and it will have a specific weight in the selection and ranking of candidates. The recognition mentioned in b) is only effective when considered an entry requirement for this cycle of studies and cannot be understood as conferring the equivalence to a BA degree or to its recognition.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently enrolled. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever the grade comprises more than one.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

1. To critically reflect on the question of language: its nature, its social and political implications, its (im)possibilities of communication, its aesthetic dimension, and the emancipatory strategies of transformation that resist the hegemonic understanding of language and text;
2. To critically reflect on writing: its nature, its models and counter-models, its forms and genres;
3. To produce original texts that demonstrate competence in the experimentation with the operators and conventions of different genres and forms of writing in the fields of literary writing, audiovisual narrative and performing arts;
4. To be able analyze and evaluate the processes and practices of writing, one’s own production as well as those by one’s peers, in the domains of literary writing, audiovisual narrative and performing arts;
5. To become acquainted with the diverse contexts of professional writing practices through direct contact with professional writers in multiple domains of activity.

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.
