PhD in Informatics Engineering
General Objectives of the Course
The PhD study cycle aims to provide advanced scientific training in the area of Informatics Engineering. The study cycle is open to both national and foreign students, aiming to prepare them for carrying out top quality scientificresearch, autonomously, in the most diverse contexts, as well as contributing to their integration in international knowledge networks. The current proposal is based on the experience acquired through the Doctoral Program in Information Sciences and Technologies, since its creation in 2006. The study cycle is structured in five areas of specialization in Informatics Engineering and intends to explore the opportunities for the realization of research projects with high scientific potential in these areas, as well as taking advantage of the diversity of intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary spaces.
Admission Requirements
a) MSc graduation with a background in Informatics Engineering or similar;
b) BSc graduation in Informatics Engineering or similar with an excellent scientific and academic curriculum.

Students admitted to examination are those who are registered in the curricular units in the academic year in which the exams are carried out and, simultaneously, registered in those examinations, whenever this registration is necessary, in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra (ARUC). The typology of assessment elements is defined in the PRUC. Assessment of each curricular unit may include one or more of the mentioned assessment elements. The mark obtained by each student in each curricular unit consists of a whole number between 0 and 20 points and students who obtain the minimum final mark of 10 points are successfully assessed. Whenever assessment of a curricular unit comprises more than one assessment element, the final mark is calculated using the marks obtained by the students in each assessment element by means of a formula that is made public in accordance with the ARUC.Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
At the end of the doctoral study cycle, students must:- Understand and integrate the conceptual and methodological foundations of research on Informatics Engineering;
- Formulate relevant research questions when faced with a research problem in the area of his Thesis, identify, develop and use both theoretical and experimental abstractions and methodologies appropriate for approaching the raised issues, in order to obtain original solutions to the problem under study;
- Be able to evaluate the merits and shortcomings of the solutions found, in various perspectives, both in absolute terms and in comparison with alternative solutions;
- Be able to convey and discuss, orally and in writing, research results with both their peers and with non-experts, in an international context;
- Be able to interact in a team in a research context, coordinating tasks, cooperating in pursuing goals and integrating results.
