Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering

General Objectives of the Course

The Master in Biomedical Engineering (MEB) aims to train professionals with high technical and scientific qualifications, as well as high standards of professional, social and ethical responsibility, able to apply the Engineering concepts and techniques to the analysis and solution of problems in the framework of Biology, Medicine and Healthcare. The graduates will be able to carry out research and/or innovation works in the framework of the advanced technologies related to Biomedical Engineering, in industrial, clinical or laboratory contexts, with a high degree of autonomy.
The training provided by MEB enables its graduates to meet the current needs and global challenges of Biomedical Engineering, with emphasis in the specialization areas of Image and Radiation, Biomedical Instrumentation, Biomaterials, Neuroscience and Clinical Informatics and Bioinformatics, and gives them the technical, interpersonal and social skills to intervene and lead in these areas of expertise.

Admission Requirements

First cycle in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biological Engineering or related area, or to hold a learning, scientific or professional curriculum that the Program Coordination recognizes as sufficient to attest the ability to complete this cycle of studies.

Candidates should check the admission requirements available on this site, in addition to the information provided here.

Professional Goals

The main professional opportunities of Biomedical Engineers are the technological companies linked to Health, in which their field of action ranges from the development of biomedical instrumentation, to the use of biomaterials in clinical applications, including medical imaging technology and image reconstruction, use of radiation in diagnosis and therapy, development of software for monitoring and analysis of data collected in medical applications, neuroscience research, among many others. They can perform specialized scientific and technical functions in sectors - Industry, Environment, Services, Research and Regulation - related to health, from consulting activities to operation and monitoring of medical equipment, quality control of procedures, etc. Biomedical Engineers are recruited mainly by medical equipment, pharmaceutical material and medical instrumentation companies, by clinics and hospitals (in the areas of clinical engineering and equipment and facilities maintenance and monitoring), by public research and development laboratories and large companies, etc.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The goal of the Master in Biomedical Engineering (MEB) is to train qualified Engineering professionals, able to follow and intervene at the level of scientific and technological innovation in the fields of Medicine and Biology, including in the context of scientific research.
At the end, students must:
-Have solid training in Biomedical Engineering, with specific training in one of the areas of specialization of the MEB.
- Have skills that enable to pursue continuous and autonomous learning, ensuring their update throughout the active life.
-Be able to intervene at the level of innovation in the Biomedical Engineering domains, solving problems in new situations, in broad and multidisciplinary contexts.
-Be able to work autonomously, assuming responsibilities in planning and management of projects and structures in the area of Biomedical Engineering.
-Be capable of establishing and coordinating interdisciplinary teams in institutions related to Biological and Medical sciences.
