General Objectives of the Course

This SC corresponds to the 2nd stage of specialised training in Psychology. It fulfils the requirements of the Bologna Declaration and offers adequate training for professional practice in Psychology, in accordance with the regulatory principles of the Order of Portuguese Psychologists. Its main objectives are: to provide students with a solid scientific and technical background in the field of Organisational Psychology; to contribute to training qualified professionals and competent researchers in this field of specialisation; to become a national and international reference in teaching OP. The Master’s Degree adopts the guidelines defined by the EuroPsy model, supported by the European Federation of Psychologists' Associations (EFPA) and adopts the model proposed by ENOP (European Network of Organisational Psychologists) as a reference. This Master also provides access to third-cycle studies.

Admission Requirements

The following are eligible to apply to the MPO: a) Holders of a bachelor's degree or its equivalent in Psychology; b) Holders of a degree in Psychology by a foreign institution, awarded after a first-cycle study structured according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a participating country; c) Holders of a degree by a foreign institution, recognised as fulfilling the objectives of a bachelor's degree in Psychology by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra.

Professional Goals

The Master’s Degree in Organizational Psychology (PO) promotes career opportunities, both in terms of professional practice in organisations and in the development of an academic career. The training it provides, which is based on the scientist-practical model, results from a dynamic combination of competencies development within the scope of research and intervention. Thus, it enables future professionals to exercise their profession in a comprehensive, an autonomous, and a responsible way, within different organisational contexts (either integrated in the structure of an organisation or as consulting service providers). It also enables them to produce scientific knowledge and develop knowledge and competencies that are required for proceeding to a 3rd cycle of studies. The training acquired in this master’s degree course enables students to the professional practice in organisations of any sector of activity and carry out functions and assuming very diverse responsibilities. Organisational Psychology, as one of the renowned speciality fields of Psychology, involves domains concerning the field of work, organisations and human resources. At work level, the future professionals will be able to intervene, for example, in the analysis of the relationship between work processes and the person (e.g., ergonomics, workload or psychosocial risks) and in the design and (re)design of work and its environment. The analysis, diagnosis, and intervention in the domains of the organisational change, communication, organisational culture, knowledge management, motivation and satisfaction, or teamwork, show the type of intervention within the scope of Organisations. At the Human Resources level, the examples are activities such as job description, analysis and qualification, professional training and its management, recruitment and selection, onboarding processes, performance management, pay and reward systems, as well as career development.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Since assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from teaching, it aims to assess the competencies and knowledge acquired by students, their critical spirit, their ability to enunciate and solve problems, as well as their proficiency in written and oral expression. The students who are admitted to sit the exams are the ones that are registered in the respective curricular units in the academic year to which the exams refer, and, at the same time, registered in these exams, when such registration is necessary, in accordance with number 6 of article 4 of the Pedagogical Regulation of the University of Coimbra. The assessment modalities are as follows: written and/or oral exam, tests, individual and/or group work, which may need to be defended orally, as well as reports of participation in research. The assessment of each curricular unit may include one or more of the aforementioned assessment modalities and others not mentioned here. The grade awarded to each student, concerning each curricular unit, is an integer value between 0 and 20, and the students who obtain a final grade equal to or greater than 10 are considered to have completed the curricular unit. Whenever the assessment of a curricular unit comprises more than one assessment modality, the final grade is calculated from the grades obtained in each modality by using a formula that is made public by means of the annual curricular unit file, in accordance with number 2 of Article 7 of the RPUC. In addition, the assessment and grading rules concerning this Master’s Degree Course will always have as reference the Pedagogical Regulation of the UC and the FPCEUC Assessment rules in force.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

In accordance with the skills laid out in the Specialist EuroPsy Certificate in WOP-P, students should be able to: Identify, differentiate, describe and evaluate the main theories, models and approaches to organisations; Apply their knowledge in the analysis, design, development and evaluation of intervention plans; Plan, monitor and select/create instruments to be deployed in intervention and/or organisational research. Students are also expected to develop cross-competencies to: Solve problems and make decisions, exercising their critical thinking; Communicate effectively and collaborate with third parties; Learn autonomously and develop strategies and action plans, showing resilience and an ability to adapt; show awareness of ethical issues, advances in ITs and sustainability; Develop themselves personally/professionally throughout life.

The Master's degree is granted to those who, through approval in all curricular units that constitute the cycle of studies and in the public act of defense of the dissertation/internship report, have obtained 120 ECTS.
