Master degree in Psychology of Education, Development and Counselling

General Objectives of the Course

This master degree aims to prepare students for the exercise of Psychology in the specialty of Education, Development and Counseling, endowing them with the scientific knowledge indispensable for understanding a multilevel model of intervention in which the psychologist's sphere is located working in educational contexts, the technical skills(integrated set of skills, capacities and attitudes needed to solve problems posed in the professional practice in educational contexts) and research skills (integrated set of knowledge and skills needed to design and conduct research in the broad domain of Psychology of Education), indispensable to the professional requirements of the exercise of Psychology in this specialty, enabling students to carry out the professional internship at OPP, an indispensable condition for obtaining the professional certification.

Admission Requirements

MPEDA entry requirements: Holders of a degree in Psychology or legal equivalent (Psychological Sciences); b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree conferred following a 1st study cycle, in the area of Psychology, organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a state adhering to this Process; c) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized by the institution's statutory competent entity as meeting the objectives of the degree in Psychology.

Professional Goals

Access to a professional internship under the supervision of the Portuguese Psychologists’ Association (OPP) and subsequent registration in that association, which is mandatory for the exercise of the profession of Psychologist. Psychological practice (evaluation and/or intervention) in formal educational contexts (grouped schools/ungrouped schools, higher education institutions), in non-formal educational contexts (senior universities, old age homes, old age day centres and similar institutions, municipalities), child-psychiatry services, educational centres, IPSS’s and community intervention associations, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), ANIP and early intervention institutions, sports training centres (e.g.: Dragon Force), psychosocial rehabilitation and mental health institutions, employment and vocational training centres, private medical clinics/counselling services. The occupational profile corresponds to what is defined by the OPP (2017) in the document “Profile of Education Psychologists”.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The students registered for the curricular units in the academic year, to which the exams refer, are admitted to sit these exams in accordance with number 6 of Article 4 of the UC Pedagogical Regulation (RPUC). The assessment modalities are e.g.: Written or oral exam, tests, practical/field work, as well as projects, which may need to be defended orally, and participation in classes. The assessment of each curricular unit may include one or more of the aforementioned assessment modalities. The grade awarded to each student, concerning each curricular unit, is an integer value between 0 and 20, and the students who obtain the final minimum grade of 10 are considered to have completed the curricular unit. Whenever the assessment of a curricular unit comprises more than one assessment modality, the final grade is calculated from the grades obtained in each modality by using a formula that is made public by means of the annual curricular unit file, in accordance with number 2 of Article 7 of the RPUC and the FPCEUC assessment rules.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Considering the technical and scientific references proposed and/or validated by the ME and OPP, as well as Decree- Law No. 54/2018, of 6 June, which establishes the bases of an inclusive school: - Knowledge of the main factors that enable the removal of barriers to the learning and the creation of inclusive contexts; - Solid knowledge in the fields of promoting psychological health and lifelong development; - Knowledge of the main models, consolidated and emerging, to support transitions and autonomous career management; - Skills in the fields of collaborative consultancy, neuropsychological assessment, SEN and career and early intervention; - Skills for psychological and psychopedagogical intervention in the academic, socio-emotional, behavioral and vocational domains; - Ability to prepare technical and scientific reports and recommendations; - Ability to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of interventions carried out.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The present study cycle gives the degree of master according to the principles in DL 74/2006, of March 24, in its current wording, republished in DL 65/2018, of 16 and August.

Graduation Requirements

The Master's degree is awarded to those who successfully complete the set of curricular units included in the MPEDA study plan, totaling 120 ECTS, which include the completion and public discussion of a dissertation and an internship report.

Access to Further Studies

By awarding a Master’s degree, this course enables access to third cycle courses (PhD Courses).
