Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering

General Objectives of the Course

The LEB aims to provide a solid base training in structuring areas like physics, mathematics and biomedical sciences, and on specific areas of Biomedical Engineering, and to develop skills for following advanced studies and for the eventual start of professional practice.
At the end of LEB, the student should have:
essential knowledge of Physics, Mathematics, Biomedical Sciences, Programming and Signals and Systems Analysis, configuring an initial training of broad spectrum in Biomedical Engineering that allows him/her to follow his/her advanced training in different areas of specialization.
skills required for professional practice, as scientific aptitude and creativity, sense of responsibility and critical thinking, autonomous learning ability, teamwork skills, including in interdisciplinary teams and communication skills.
theoretical and laboratorial training that allows to begin professional practice in areas related to Biomedical Engineering.

Admission Requirements

According to article 31 of the Academic Regulation of the UC (RAUC nº 341/2015, DR 2ª series, nº 116 of June 17, 2015) the specific conditions of access and entrance of the students in the 1st cycles of studies and integrated cycles of studies, in particular with regard to tests and vacancies, are fixed by the Rector, on proposal of the Organizational Units, with the list of entrance tests fixed by the National Commission for Access to Higher Education (CNAES), on a proposal from the UC. Vacancies are fixed annually by the General Directorate of Higher Education (DGES).
- National Access Contest: Physics and Chemistry (07) and Mathematics A (19), with a minimum score of 10.0 points (100 points) in each entrance exam.

There is also the possibility of joining LEB by:
- Re-entry, transfer and change of course
- Special access contest for people over 23 years old
- Special access contest for holders of medium or higher education course
- Special contest for international students (the conditions for access and admission of international students are set out in their own regulations, available at http://www.uc.pt/candidatos-internacionais/regulamento/Regulamento-EEI-DR.pdf).
The conditions of access to these ingress tracks follow the Portuguese legislation and are detailed at https://www.uc.pt/candidatos/escola_1

Professional Goals

The main professional opportunities are those of superior technicians in the area of Biomedical Engineering and related. Graduates in Biomedical Engineering are prepared to perform functions in the area of technology applied to Health, such as the development of basic instrumentation, development of simple software and application of biomaterials. They can perform non specialized scientific and technical functions in sectors - Industry, Environment, Services, Research and Regulation - with links to Health.
