Master in Medical Physics
General Objectives of the CourseThe present proposal aims at answering to the specific educational requirements for the students that intend to enter the Medical Physics area as qualified professionals. This Master program intends to provide the students with a comprehensive and integrated view of the scientific, technological, technical, socio-economic, ethical, legal, regulatory and legislative issues associated to Medical Physics but also to Radiological Protection and Safety, responding in
this area to the legal requirement (DL227/2008) and to the European recommendations (EFOMP).
A set of legal diplomas is presently under preparation that will transpose the European Directive 2013/59/Euratom. As required by this Directive, the recognition of the Medical Physics expert shall follow a structured education and training framework that includes a Master Degree in Medical Physics with the characteristics and study plan of the one that is proposed here. This proposal aims to offer the 2nd cycle of studies required by that Directive.
First cycle in Physics, Physical Engineering, Technological Physics, Applied Physics or Biomedical Engineering, or pre-Bologna degree in one of these areas, or to hold a teaching, scientific or professional curriculum that the Program Coordination recognizes as sufficient to attest the ability to complete this cycle of studies.

Professional GoalsThe main professional will be that of Medical Physicist, after the specialized clinical training in a hospital environment, which will be part of the qualification framework of the profession of Medical Physicist. Such education and training framework should be regulated through the transposition of Directive 59/2013 Euratom. The Medical Physicists will be prepared to follow this
profession in the area of Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine, and Diagnostic and Intervention Radiology. They also have academic instruction and training to perform dose calculations and put in place radiation protection strategies in medical and/or technological applications and imaging techniques that utilize ionizing radiation. In addition, they can perform scientific and technical specialized functions in sectors - Industry, Environment, Services, Research and Regulation - in which ionizing and non-ionizing radiation is used (by law, all the workplaces where ionizing radiation is employed must have a professional specialist in radiation protection, as the graduates from this Master Program are. Furthermore, the graduated in Medical Physics have the ideal instruction and training to carry out research in the areas of Medical Imaging, Radiotherapy, Dosimetry, Radiation Protection and related areas.

Learning Objectives and Intended SkillsThe education objectives of this MSc follow the European recommendations on the training of medical physicists. They include to achieve a robust technical and scientific body of knowledge on topics associated to the Physics principles, methods and techniques applied to health, both in diagnosis and therapy, namely in what concerns to quality assurance, optimization and safety of procedures and equipment involving ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
This MSc also aims at developing different instrumental skills as retrieve information from different sources, analyse and synthesize, problems solving, decision making, interpersonal skills as communicate orally and in writing with both experts and non-experts in the field, respect diversity, work productively in multi-disciplinary teams, criticize constructively and accept constructive
criticism, and systemic skills as adapt to new situations, display autonomy, responsibility and initiative, recognize one’s limitations and abilities.

Recognition of Prior LearningRecognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.
Qualification Requirements and RegulationsThe relevant legislation for the attribution of a Master Degree is DL 74/2006, of March 24, with subsequent amendments, Portaria 782/2009, of July 23.
Obtaining the 108 compulsory ECTS and 12 optional ECTS, including the presentation and defence of a Master's Dissertation.
Access to Further StudiesThe Master in Medical Physics gives access to 3rd Cycle (PhD Programs) in Medical Physics and related areas. It will also give access to the Specialization in Medical Physics or Hospital Physics, with the completion of a specialization internship in these areas, as stated by the European Directive 2013/59/Euratom and the European and International recommendations on the requirements for the access to the Medical Physics career.
