MATLIT: International Summer School in Materialities of Literature

General Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to develop an emerging area of research focused on analyzing the materialities of literature, that is, the relation between literary meaning and the materialities of language, sound, voice, performance, codex, image, and digital writing. The MATLIT International Summer School has been designed as a general introduction to this field of research, covering different perspectives on the intersections between literature and mediation. How do the materialities of communication affect our notion of literature? Did typewriting and word processing change writing practices? How does a codex work? How does a digital literary archive relate to a book? Can a poem exist without ever being written? What is an audiotext? Can a novel exist as an endless series of hyperlinks? In what sense is the computer a literary machine? These questions will form the basis of the Summer School, which is structured into three major topics: “Ex Machina: Inscription and Literature”; “Vox Media: Sound in Literature” and “ReCodex: Forms and Transformations of the Book”.
