General Objectives of the CourseThe PhD in Geology aims to provide a sound ground for an advanced scientific education in Geology, which will
enable the students to achieve scientific work of high quality and their integration in international networks of
The PhD Geology program aims to graduate highly specialized geologists which will have:
a) The capability of a systematic understanding of Geology;
b) The competences, aptness and investigation methodologies in Geology;
c) The capacity to conceive, project, adapt and develop independent investigation that meet the requirements
imposed by international academic standards;
d) Developed a significant number of original research projects that have provided contributions to the growing
knowledge in Geology, and which can be published in national and international refereed scientific publications;
e) The capacity to perform critical analysis, to evaluate and to synthesize new and complex ideas;
f) The capacity to communicate the results of their work to other geologists, academic community and society;
g) The capacity to promote the technologic, scientific, social and cultural progress.

b) Candidates with a first degree course (Graduation) that have a very relevant academic or scientific curriculum
that can be considered apropriated for this course by the Scientific Council of the Faculdade de Ciências e
Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra; c) Candidates with an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that
could be considered appropriated for this course by the Scientific Council of the Faculdade de Ciências e
Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra.

Professional GoalsThe PhD in geology forms highly specialized geologists, with ability to systematic understanding of the Geology, which obtain competencies, skills and methods of investigation, specific of Geology. They acquire the ability to conceive, design, adapt and perform a significant research respecting the requirements imposed by the standards of academic quality and integrity. They will have aptitude to carry on scientific research , leadership, project, prospection and planning activities in public and private organizations

Examination Regulations, Assessment and GradingAs assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Qualification Requirements and RegulationsThe legal framework for the qualification is established in DR Series II, in Order 18/94 to 17/05. The wording was based on the Decree Law 74/2006 amended by Decree 107/2008 (Articles 61 to 63) and Order No. 7287-B/2006 (2nd series).
A student finishes the PhD course when have already earned the requisite credits to satisfy at least one of the tables associated with the current curriculum structure.
