PhD in Physics Engineering
General Objectives of the CourseIt is intended to take students with a master's degree (preferrably in Physics Engineering, Physics and other áreas of Engineering) and provide them with training to become specialists who, thanks to a thorough knowledge of both
Physics and emerging technologies at the state of the art level, can create new opportunities through innovative research outputs especially useful to the industrial sector of economy. For this purpose, the training of specialists
able to deepen and take advantage of their knowledge of microphysics developed throughout the twentieth century is a specific area of knowledge, which complements and enhances the classic branches of engineering.
The requirements to access the PhD program are those defined by “Regulamento de Doutoramento da Universidade de Coimbra”. Candidates to the cycle of studies leading to a doctor degree must fulfill one of the following requirements:
a) Master degree or legal equivalent;
b) Approval in public assessment of pedagogical and scientific capacities (for assistant lecturers);
c) Graduation, plus an academic or cientific curriculum recognized by the scientific council of the faculty they apply to, as being particularly relevant to pursue this cycle of studies;
d) Academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized by the faculty they apply to, as a guarantee of their capacity to proceed to this cycle of studies.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and GradingAs assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.
Learning Objectives and Intended SkillsThe first year is intended to give additional advanced level training to allow students with different backgrounds at the master's level, to specialize in the specific areas of their theses (see knowledge, skills and competences defined for the different subjects slong section 6.2.1.) and confront the student with the beginning of the research (Thesis Project).
Along the remaining years the Thesis allows the student to learn the methodology of scientific research and to apply it, in order to acquire autonomy in organizing and conducting research projects, by carrying out original research work and contributing to the progress in his specific field of knowledge and / or creating original products and solutions. It is understood to be, in first place, the role of the supervisor monitoring and verifying the accomplishment of such goals.

Recognition of Prior LearningSpecific training obtained in either 2nd or 3rd cycle courses can be credited upon request of the candidate and evaluation by the course coordinator. However, no equivalence can be given to Projecto de Tese.
Qualification Requirements and RegulationsThe legal framework for the qualification is established in Decree-Law 74/2006 of 24 March, republished on June 25, 2008, Order No. 10543 / 2005 s and 7287 -C/2006, respectively, on May 11 and March 31.
The course will provide the degree of doctor to those who demonstrate:
- Ability to systematically understand their scientific field of study;
- Competencies, skills and research methods associated with that scientific field;
- Ability to conceive, design, adapt and perform a significant research respecting the requirements imposed by the standards of academic quality and integrity;
- Have completed a significant body of original research that contributed to extend the frontiers of knowledge, some of which has been the subject of national or international dissemination in peer reviewed publications or, in other cases, is under protection of intellectual or industrial property;
- Be able to critically analyze, evaluate and synthesise new and complex ideas;
- Be able to communicate with their peers, the academic community and society at large over the area of specialization;
- Be able to, in a knowledge-based society, to promote the academic or professional qualification, technological, social or cultural progress.
This set of skills is developed sequentially along the course. During the first two semesters by participating in courses provided and critical reflection that leads to the formulation of the thesis project, then in the course of research under the project and, finally, along the work that leads to the thesis.
