Advanced Specialization Course in Medicinal Chemistry

General Objectives of the Course

The advanced specialization course in Medicinal Chemistry is intended to frame the training of students who have been admitted to the PhD program in Medicinal Chemistry funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), ref. PD / 00147/2013. This PhD program is framed by the Programme Contract and the Cooperation Protocol signed by the FCT, University of Coimbra, Chemistry Centre of Coimbra, Center for Neuroscience and Molecular Biology (CNC), University of Lisbon, Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon University, Institute Medicine Research, Structural Chemistry Research Centre, Institute of Molecular Medicine, Bial SA, Hovione SA and Bluepharma SA. This project provides for the transfer of funding of 100,000 euros from the FCT to the University of Coimbra, payment of 28 12-month research grants and 25 36 months PhD scholarships. The PD Program / 00147/2013 integrates in detailed below doctorates, duly established and accredited in accordance with the laws in force, and the students titled Program by one of these:
a) PhD in chemistry, created by Order No. 17877/2008 published in DR 126, 2nd Series, July 2, 2008, the Higher Technical Institute of Lisbon University.
b) PhD in Pharmacy branch of knowledge (Specialty Pharmaceutical and Therapeutic Chemistry), established by Order No. 1062/2008 published in DR Gazette, 2nd Series - No. 70-9 of April 2008 the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon.
c) PhD in PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmaceutical Chemistry specialty), created by Order No. 1955/2012 published in DR 2nd Series, No. 30 of 10 February 2012, the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra.
d) PhD in PhD in Chemistry (Medical Chemistry branch), created by Order No. 22844/2009 published in Official Gazette No 200, series 2, October 15, 2009, the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra.
Completeting the advanced specialization course in Medicinal Chemistry will be required for further studies in doctoral programs above.

Admission Requirements

Holders of a MSc in Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, or related science, accepted in Programa de Doutoramento em Química Medicinal financed by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), ref. PD/00147/2013.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The evaluation rules are defined for each curricular unit of the course according of the established rules of University of Coimbra. For each of them, the final grade will be defined in the range 0 to 20 points and approval will be obtained by reaching a final grade of at least 10 points.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

MedChemTrain is a modular program built on a platform of core courses and laboratory rotations that fits the profile of the student to maximize his/her potential in Medicinal Chemistry.
