Master Course on Acoustic and Energy Efficiency for a Sustainable Construction

General Objectives of the Course

The course aims to create a training offer in the field of civil engineering, centered on building behaviour, but that is of interest to other branches of engineering. The course is devoted to the transmission of advanced knowledge in the specific fields of acoustics and energy in buildings and their envelope. Besides their individual importance, these two themes also have a strong connection to several others, in particular those related to rehabilitation of buildings and to construction sustainability, issues of great social and environmental importance in the present context. It is intended with this course to provide students with advanced theoretical knowledge in the identified topics, which are useful from the point of view of practical application and constitute a significant added value compared to what is traditionally taught in integrated Masters courses. It also aims to transmit advanced knowledge of building acoustics / vibrations and thermal performance of buildings.

Admission Requirements

Holders of first cycle (bachelor) courses or equivalent in Civil Engineering or similar.

Candidates should check the admission requirements available on this site, in addition to the information provided here.

Professional Goals

Being an Advanced Master Course, it is expected that most students who attend the course are already working, so their perspective is not reaching the labor market, but instead increase their knowledge and potentiate their competitiveness in their specific area of operation. In the remaining cases, it is important to note that after finishing the proposed MSc course successfully, students gain valences that will allow them an easier integration into the labor market in areas related to acoustic assessment and acoustic design of buildings, and thermal design and energy audit in buildings, both from the perspective of the new construction or rehabilitation.

Mode of Study

Daytime, full-time and face-to-face

Teaching / Evaluation language(s)

Portuguese / English

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items, with the evaluation rules being defined individually for each unit. For each of them, the final grade will be based on a scale of 0 to 20, and approval is obtained by reaching a final grade of at least 10.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

It is intended that, at the end of this course, the students have acquired advanced knowledge in the areas of acoustics and energy in buildings that allow them to:
- Understand the relevant physical phenomena related to buildings;
- Understand the importance of those themes in new buildings and rehabilitation of buildings;
- Understand the relevance of acoustic and energy performance for sustainable construction;
- Analyze and propose solutions to practical problems in the covered areas;
- Model and perform a detailed analysis of acoustic and thermal phenomena;
- Know the laboratory and in-situ experimental procedures regarding acoustic and thermal/energy performance in buildings.
