PhD in Architecture

General Objectives of the Course

The Doctoral Program’s objectives focus on advanced knowledge on scientific areas which can be considered specific within the field of architecture. This knowledge should be useful not only for research but also to architectural education and professional activity.
These fields aim to deepen and to expand knowledge in architecture through the research on specific areas — Cultural Studies and Architecture; Theory and History of Architecture and Urbanism; Urban Culture and Design. To do so, the program focuses on developing epistemologically and consistent research methodologies that ensure the knowledge reliability produced in those areas.
After the changes introduced by the Bologna Process, the PhD program in Architecture of the University of Coimbra has been progressively improved, integrating all the contents suggested by pedagogical practices and by the results of the didactic experience.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The PhD Study Cycle targets architects and candidates with other scientific backgrounds which are aligned with architectural research. This program will be carried out in a research and debate environment. Its complexity fulfils the need for knowledge-crossing that is typical from this area of study. The same applies to the final product of this training — the PhD Thesis.
Other outcomes concern the expansion of knowledge in the field of architecture and in some more specific areas — Cultural Studies and Architecture; Theory and History of Architecture and Urbanism; Urban Culture and Design — in order to interact, in an active and qualified way, with the broader scientific community, aiming to the progress of knowledge.
