General Objectives of the Course

- Provide training expertise in order to allow access to research, innovation or to increase professional skills;
- Allow the development of appropriate tools for building skilled professionals, experts, teachers, researchers and specialists;
- Develop comprehension and problem solving skills in new situations or in wide multidisciplinary contexts;
- Build capacity to deal with complex issues, develop solutions and make judgments about the implications and ethical and social responsibilities of these solutions;
- Develop skills to communicate knowledge and reasoning to specialists or non-specialists, in a clear and unambiguous manner;
- Encourage the acquisition of a strong culture based on ethical and humanistic values of responsibility and socio-professional and civic participation in public life.

Admission Requirements

Students who meet the following criteria may apply to this program: a) Holders of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Journalism or Communication Sciences; b) Holders of a bachelor's degree or equivalent in similar areas that enable the student to successfully complete the Master's in Communication and Journalism; c) Holders of a foreign academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of a bachelor's degree as well as enabling the student to successfully complete this program; d) Holders of an academic, or professional curriculum vitae that is recognized as attesting the capacity to successful complete this cycle of studies.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

1 - Demonstrate an understanding of the theories and ethics of communication, journalism and public space;
2 - Demonstrate sound methodological knowledge for the development of research projects in the areas of Communication Sciences and journalism;
3 - Demonstrate the capacity to use methodologies and technologies adapted to research;
4 - Demonstrate academic, ethical and methodological capabilities for pursuing postgraduate studies, particularly at the doctoral level;
5 - Demonstrate an understanding of journalism terminology in offline and online media;
6 - Demonstrate skills in understanding, selection, creation and dissemination of complex content in public contexts, in particular using journalism terminology;
7 - Demonstrate the ability to apply the program material to social and professional contexts and concrete projects.

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the Decree-Law nr 74/2006, 24th March, in its current wording; and Ordinance nr 782/2009, 23rd July.

Graduation Requirements

Achievement of the passing grade in a set of curricular units that amount to a total of 120 ECTS which also include the completion and public defense of a dissertation, project or internship report.
