General Objectives of the Course

The graduate must hold the capabilities to autonomously:
a) deepen and develop the knowledge acquired in the 1st cycle;
b) apply knowledge, understanding and problem solving technique in teaching situations, including new and unfamiliar ones;
c) deal with complex issues in the teaching of philosophy, develop solutions and make judgments in the concrete conditions of pedagogical practice, including reflections on the application of such knowledge and judgments and ethical responsibilities involved in judgments and proposed solutions;
d) communicate their conclusions and the knowledge and reasoning underlying them, clearly and unambiguously to both specialists and laymen;
e) lifelong, self-directed learning.

Admission Requirements

1) Have a bachelor's degree; 2) have earned at least 120 credits (ECTS) in the area of Philosophy, in accordance with Executive Order 43/2007 of 22 February. 3) Pass a written and oral exam in Portuguese showing fluency in Portuguese. This exam will be given at FLUC. Candidates who took and passed this test in the last two years do not have to take this exam again. Students who have completed a bachelor's degree in the area of Philosophy at FLUC are also exempt from this test. 4) Students who have a bachelor's degree and have earned 75% of the required ECTS in teaching, can also apply for this program. However, candidates who are admitted under these conditions may not register in Didactic specific disciplines or courses in the 2nd year until they have completed all the necessary ECTS.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

At the conclusion of this program, graduates will be qualified for the following activities:
a) teach at the secondary school level, with initial professional experience, supervised and developed in a school setting, and a strong grasp of the curriculum content;
b) theoretical and practical mastery of strategies and teaching and pedagogical techniques, effective both in terms of content as well as the relationship with the students and the school community, including special educational needs;
c) complex analysis of education, the development of curriculum projects and formative and objective and fair summary assessment ;
d) responsible, general and specifically educational social and ethical reflection;
e) constant criticism and correction of their own inadequacies, professional development and self-directed lifelong learning;
f) independent research at the specific level of 3rd Cycle educational content.

Graduation Requirements

The degree will be awarded to students who have earned the total number of credits, after having obtained approval in:
a) all courses defined for this MA program; and
b) the public defense of the action-research report presented at the end of the 2nd year;
c) in the case referred to in numbers 5 and 6 of Art. 18 of Decree-Law 79/2014, the degree is awarded to those who meet all of the minimum entry requirements as well as the conditions specified in paragraphs a) and b).
