Master’s degree in Art and Heritage

General Objectives of the Course

Consolidate the knowledge previously established through the use of the large, specialized and updated bibliographical resources;
Understand the contexts and processes of the art object in an expanded chronology, from a critical perspective.
Stimulate the ability to structure and implement projects for creating and disseminating historical and artistic heritage;
Promoting a high level of ability to integrate knowledge and handle complex situations of a transdisciplinary or interdisciplinary nature;
Ability to critically articulate the various areas inherent in art history;
Enable the contemporary intervention in heritage culture.

Admission Requirements

a) Holders of a bachelor's degree or its equivalent in History, History of Art, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage and Tourism;
b) Holders of a higher education degree by a foreign institution awarded after a 1st study cycle structured according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a participating country;
c) Holders of a higher education degree by a foreign institution in the same areas recognized as fulfilling the objectives of a bachelor’s degree;
d) Applicants having a relevant academic or professional CV recognized as attesting the ability to undertake master’s level studies.

Professional Goals

Students will gain a solid preparation for continuing their studies, not only in the field of Art History (3rd cycle), but likewise in complementary areas such as Museology or Heritage and Cultural Tourism. However, if they wish to opt for an immediate entry into the labor market, the training they receive will enable them to be to perform functions in central and local government as well as private organizations and foundations, museums, monuments, heritage sites and companies, covering areas such as: Education, Research, Inventory, Specialized Projects Assistant, Cultural Management, Event production, Educational services and outreach, Communication, Cultural tourism, Editorial market and the art market.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

From a multidisciplinary perspective and confrontation between different fields of knowledge, graduates of this course of study will acquire the following skills:
Ability to deal with vast and contradictory information;
Ability to develop a theoretical reflection on artistic and heritage events.
Expertise to develop unique applications of knowledge;
Master mechanisms suited to projects of research and dissemination of historical-artistic heritage;
Learn to promote enjoyment of historical-artistic heritage.
High level of ability to communicate their findings in different ways and to different audiences;
Ability to continue the learning and development process throughout their lifetime.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the Decree-Law nr 74/2006, 24th March, in its current wording; and Ordinance nr 782/2009, 23rd July.

Graduation Requirements

Achievement of the passing grade in a set of curricular units that amount to a total of 120 ECTS which also include the completion and public defense of a dissertation, project or internship report.

Access to Further Studies

PhD degree studies.
