Master in Informatics Engineering

General Objectives of the Course

MEI aims to provide specialized training in the different areas of information technologies allowing students to carry out advanced professional activities, and enabling students to pursue a career in science to continue their training in a doctoral program. MEI aims to complement the Informatics Engineering training of students from a related 1st cycle course, giving them specialized knowledge and equipping them with the design skills essential to the recognition of the profession by the Order of Engineers at national level, and by similar institutions at international level. MEI's organization follows the curriculum recommendations of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) and the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), adapting them to the characteristics of the national candidates and to the logics of mobility envisaged in the European Higher Education area.

Admission Requirements

Potential candidates should fulfil one of the following requirements:
a) Holders of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Engineering, Informatics and Systems Engineering, Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering;. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent in other areas of Engineering and Exact and Natural Sciences which are organized according to Bologna process
b) Holders of a foreign academic degree obtained in a 1st cycle organised according to the Bologna process in the areas mentioned in point a) or that is recognized by the Scientific Committee of DEI to meet the objectives of a 1st cycle degree in the areas mentioned in point a)
c) In justified cases, holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized to confer the capacity to complete this cycle of studies by the Scientific Committee of DEI.

Since the area of ​​computing is transversal to our society, industry, and economy, the MEI's training encompasses relevant areas such as medical and health-related informatics, intelligent transport systems, Internet of Things, and cyber-physical systems.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Since evaluation is a pedagogical activity that is inseparable from teaching, it is designed to assess the skills and knowledge acquired by the students, their critical thinking, their ability to enunciate and solve problems, as well as their mastery of written and oral exposition. MEI evaluation rules follow the Regulation of Knowledge Evaluation of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra published in Diário da República, 2nd series - No. 74 - April 16, 2018. The evaluation of the curricular units is carried out taking into account their specificities. Most of the curricular units follow the periodic assessment model, including evaluation methods that target problem solving, laboratory work, written assignments, projects and presentations, among others.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The aim of this study cycle is to train masters capable of taking up prominent positions in the business and research market in the area of informatics. Students completing MEI will acquire advanced knowledge in Informatics, with specialization in one of four areas: (i) Communications, Services and Infrastructures, (ii) Intelligent Systems, (iii) Information Systems, and (iv) Software Engineering. They will also strengthen their knowledge in the area of ​​Economics, Management, and Social Sciences. In addition, students will acquire generic skills in analysis and synthesis, written and oral communication, problem-solving approaches, critical thinking, decision-making group work, autonomous learning and practical application of theoretical knowledge. The curricular units of MEI are planned with the learning objectives in mind, and enable the development of key competences in the field of informatics engineering.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law nr nº 157/2014 (II série) de 18 de agosto de 2014.

Graduation Requirements

Conclusion of all mandatory courses (30 ECTS), specialization courses (24 ECTS) and optional courses (24 ECTS), conclusion of the dissertation / internship course (42 ECTS), with a total of 120 ECTS.

Access to Further Studies

MEI provides access to 3rd cycle national and international programs in areas related to Informatics Engineering.
